Lake Tahoe Marathon Week!

The week of September 23rd through the 27th is Marathon Week in Lake Tahoe, and offers a wide range of events for those who love to walk, run, swim, paddle or pedal through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Lake Tahoe is one of my personal favorite places to go and be active...Capitola and Santa Cruz are of course a close second!

A couple of my clients and myself will be heading up there on Saturday the 22nd to run the 10k and or the half marathon! If you are interested in signing up or just want to come out and cheer your friends on click the link below!

They even have Optomist Kids Fun Runs that are free! The fun runs feature various distances depending upon age with one year age groupings up to 12! How awesome is that? After the race all kid finishers recieve a medal, hot dog and drink. The grown ups participating in events may join the sunset pasta dinner cruise on board the Tahoe Queen Saturday the 22nd 5:30-8:30p.m. All finishers recieve medals and shirts.

Come out and challenge yourself! They even have a little 5k for beginners!

Santa Cruz to Capitola Wharf to Wharf Race

wharf to wharf 2009.jpg

July 26th 2009 I ran in the 37th annual Wharf to Wharf race from Santa Cruz to Capitola. What a blast! The weather was perfect, a nice cool 60 degrees and what a great group of people! The race is only six miles and is full of eye candy. It starts in down town Santa Cruz by the wharf and continues on to cliff drive which follows the coast line and twists and turns through some great residential areas along the way. We also got spoiled with a different live band to rock us on our way at every mile, and lots of people on the side lines to cheer us on! I will definitely be doing this run again next year, and be lining up at a faster starting time! There were 15,000 people in this race and the first 8 minutes you couldn't even run it was so crowded! My race pace for my marathon 3 years ago was a 10 minute mile, but I have actually increased my race pace finally to an 8-9 min mile! Unfortunately because we couldn't run the first 8 minutes or so of this race my first mile took 15 minutes! But I made up time and finished in 1 hour and 1 minute! Not Bad! If you are considering training for a marathon or even half marathon, this is a great race to think about doing along the course of your training. Come Join Me at Community - Wide Ladies Night Out!

~ Friday May 8th ~ 7-9p.m.
Reserve your chair for this months BUNCO event at Vino CON BRIO!
Amorosa Vineyards
7889 E. Harney Lane

Ladies Night Out provides a fun and relaxed "common ground" for women to get to know other women they don't neccesarily associate with on a day to day basis. Its a great way to meet new friends or share laughs with old ones.

They meet every 2nd Friday of the month at different coffee shops and restaurants throughout the Lodi area. This months focus topic is Stress Relief, I think we could all use some of that!

Women are multi taskers and tend to be the organizers and care givers for many, between juggling work, family, household responsibilities and playdates it's no wonder that by the end of the day we feel a bit FRAZZLED!

At Ladies Night Out I will be speaking about How to REDUCE your stress levels through excercise and good nutrition and teach you a stress relief workout you can do anywhere.

I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Vacation To Cancun

Going on vacation doesn't have to be the end of the great body you tirelessly shape in the gym day in and day out. I recently went to Cancun, MX. While there I made it a point to walk everywhere that I could including on the beach every day. You would be suprised and how many more calories walking in sand burns! I even managed to get in a couple of early morning runs! Planning activities do throughout the day like diving and snorkeling is a great way to keep you active and away from the resort buffets. Another tip is find out where the local grocery store is this will allow you to buy and prepare your own food while there which is a much more economical way to enjoy your vacation, allowing you more control over your waistline and your pocket book. (Cancun actually has a Wal Mart!) Having a couple cocktails in the evening? Help burn it off by doing karoke! Its much more fun that way and the worse you are the funnier it is! So where ever your get away is, at the beach or at the snow stay active, get outside and go play. You'll be happy and healthier because you did! Here is a pic of me and my friend Taleb at the beach. Happy Birthday Friend!

Brad Fornes

This guy here was one of my very first clients way back when! Brad is 6'4 and was a borderline diabetic before training with me. Once we started training brad began to lose weight in fact he lost 60lbs durring the 6 months that we trained! In addition the doctor told him he didn't need to take his pills for the diabetis anymore!
Too bad for me his career passion for managing Doug Herbert race car teams took him out of state and I don't train him anymore - but here is a picture of the two of us about 2 weeks ago! He happened to be in town and stopped by the gym - I was so excited and happy to see him - he has kept what he lost off and is still working out!
Brad I just want you to know how proud I am of you and how much fun it was to train with you - Keep it up and come back and visit!

San Joaquin Magazine

Well I have been pretty busy lately as most of you know I haven't had many posts up but I have been writing. I recently was hired to write the health and wellness column for San Joaquin - Valley Living Magazine!

Having a passion for writing at a young age and now getting to realize that dream through writing about my love of fitness and nutrition is just amazing to me! You know how you feel when things are coming around full circle?
Anyhow my first article is in the August issue and is called Take It Outside. It covers a lot of great local places to go outside in the valley and includes specific workouts you can do when you're there! In addtion they used a photo from our July Fitness Boot Camp of some of you running bleachers! Pretty Awesome! Pick up an issue today! Page 74! Look for me in your September issue as well I will be there! Unfortunately not all articles in the magazine are available online so I am working on getting this one up soon but here is a link to their site

About Me

Well I have debated long enough and finally decided to add a little about myself into this site which is a constant work in progress - much like myself! I am a personal trainer and a very lucky one at that because I am blessed with some of the greatest clients out there who are fun to work with and make my job very fufilling. In addition to being a personal trainer I am also a mommy to a beautiful little girl who is three and a half and the light of my life. One of the reasons I chose this profession other than the fact that I absolutely love to help people reach their dreams and goals was that it allowed me the flexibility in my schedule to spend more time with my husband and little girl.

Everyone has certain things in their life that they determine as mile stones or markers if you will of things they would like to do or accomplish before they hit a certain point in time that will give them a sense achievement. For me one of those things was to run a marathon which I did do in January of this year! I didn't qualify for Boston but I ran it damn it! 5hrs and 3 minutes whew that was the longest run of my life!

Anyhow there was one thing that I really wanted to do even before I decided to run the marathon and that was compete in either a body building or figure competition. From the first time I held a weight in my hand I knew it was something I had to do - That was about eight years ago. After I had my daughter I definitely had my doubts since I managed to gain a whole 60lbs durring my pregnancy! Can you say "oink"? The other shocker was that it didn't just fall off the day after I gave birth! That whole thing about the weight falling off - that has got to be the biggest crock of you know what I have ever heard! So back in the gym again and having a body now that is better than it has ever been even before baby I finally have the confidence to get up there and do it!

So I am currently four weeks out from the show only one month left! I have been so blessed to have the support of my trainer, friends and family and clients in the gym who are keeping me positive and foccused - Thanks you guys you don't have any idea how much your support and reasurrance means to me. ~ Melissa
